Özet
This study explores the promenade culture of 19th-century Ottoman Istanbul, with a particular focus on the Üsküdar promenades. Drawing upon primary sources such as archival documents, newspaper reports, memoirs, and travelogues, it investigates the role of these spaces as vibrant centers of social interaction, where diverse segments of Ottoman society converged, fostering cultural exchange and contributing significantly to the empire’s leisure culture. The geographical advantages and accessibility of the Üsküdar promenades made them popular destinations for people from all social, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. The study vividly illustrates the richness of these promenades, offering insights into daily life, their influence on fashion trends, and their place within Ottoman culinary culture. Key themes include the social composition of participants, the days of attendance, activities undertaken in these spaces, clothing styles, food and drink customs, and both individual and collective forms of entertainment. Furthermore, the study examines the Ottoman dynasty’s engagement with the promenades and the measures implemented by the state to regulate these public spaces. Ultimately, the research demonstrates that the Üsküdar promenades were not merely places of leisure but significant social hubs that reinforced communal bonds, facilitated cultural interactions, and reflected the social diversity and dynamism of 19th-century Ottoman Istanbul. © 2025, Selim Hilmi Ozkan.
