Older adults' views about ageism in Turkey

dc.description.abstractThis study aimed to evaluate the opinions and experiences of older adults about ageism in Turkey. It is a mixed method research carried out in two stages by using explanatory sequential design. In the quantitative stage, data were collected from 177 older adults with probability cluster sampling method and from 20 older adults with purposeful intensity sampling method in the qualitative stage in Sinop province having the highest rate of older adult population of Turkey. Data were collected by face-to-face interviews using the personal information form and Fraboni Scale of Ageism (FSA) in the first stage and through in-depth interviews using a semi-structured interview form in second stage in 2018-2019. Results showed that the averages of ageism level with sub-factors of the participants are different. It was not significantly different according to some socio-demographic variables such as gender, occupation, and number of children, but it was significantly different according to the others such as age, marital status, educational background, economic income, health status, the place where most of the time is spent, current residence, lived with whom, social security, the place where the discrimination occurs most and who is discriminated by. In addition, ageism stands out within the framework of living arrangements, sensitivities, discrimination experiences, coping methods, reflections on values, and finally access to social services. The relationship between ageism and learning was discussed. Raising awareness on ageism, the prevention of 'ageist ideology' and so the third-age university as an example of anti-ageism practice are suggested.
