dc.description.abstract | Niyazi Berkes, one of the first generation sociologists of the Republic, contributed to Turkish intellectual life on subjects such as economic and social history, social structure, modernization, the relationship between religion and state, and western thought. Berkes did not directly deal with the state as an object of study in his works. However, in his historical studies on social and economic structure and his studies on the relationship between religion and state, it is seen that Berkes examines the state as an important phenomenon. In this context, Berkes' general state theory and Turkish state theory were examined in the study. As a result, Berkes' definition of the state, which he sees as valid for Western states in his theory of the state, is not valid for Eastern states. Berkes, who deals with the general state theory with classical Marxist definitions, uses Weberian explanations while establishing the Turkish state theory. The Turkish state theory, which he established through the Ottoman Empire, is a despotic state characterization that is a product of Western thought. For Berkes, the despotic state was fully resonant in the Ottoman Empire. Thus, it is seen that Berkes establishes his theory of the state from a Western-centered perspective. © 2024, Yerel Yonetim Arastirma Yardim ve Egitim Dernegi. All rights reserved. | |
