Özet

The examination of the social and economic relationships established by people in Ottoman society is crucial in order to realize the period. In this context, using the guremâ method, this study aims to reveal the debt-indebtedness relationship, or in other words, the wealth-debt relationship, which constitutes only a part of these relationships. The primary sources for this study are the heritage records of the Bursa şeriye records from the early 18th century and the fatwa collections related to the same time. In Ottoman historical literature, studies focusing on inheritances generally involve an inventory and evaluation of individuals' wealth. In this article, different from the existing studies, the guremâ method is analyzed in terms of what it is and how its application is carried out based on fatwa collections and şeriye records. The analyses indicate that the debts of individuals recorded in the documents were not fully paid regardless of the amount of individuals' wealth. Within the evaluation of title-status scope, it is also observed that individuals from various social classes did not live in isolated worlds in their societal relationships, and they had connections with people of different ethnicities, regardless of their class. © 2024, Abidin Temizer.
