The Black Sea has experienced many unwanted environmental problems in the last 50 years. Among many of them, eutrophication, overfishing, and marine litter are the first to mention. Eutrophication has been proved to be catastrophic for the Black Sea ecosystem between 1960s and 1990s. International initiatives and efforts have succeeded in partly mitigating the problems. However, to reach the good environmental status (GES) in the frame of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and the Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires a better organization of institutions and projects. As a part of the global biogeography, the Black Sea has also been influenced by global warming phenomena that is observable as rising sea levels and surface sea temperatures (SSTs). These are such impacts that cannot be balanced within short time periods. Therefore, in order to protect this unique ecosystem, a long period projection covering the next 30-50 years should be envisaged and remedial measures implemented without any delay. The responsibility of such an action plan is bound not only by one country but also by all bordering stakeholders sharing ecosystem services of the Black Sea. © 2019 Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
