Investigation of the Relationship Between Independent Learning Behaviors and School Adjustment of Preschoolers

dc.description.abstractThis research aims to examine the relationship between independent learning behavior of preschool children and their school adjustment. The study group consists of a total of 106 children: 50 boys and 56 girls in the 5-6 age group attending preschool educational institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. In the scope of the study, Personal Information Form, Independent Learning Behavior Scale (3-5) and Teacher Rating Scale of School Adjustment for 5-6 Years of Children were used as data collection instruments. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was applied for normally distributed variables and Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient was applied for variables that are not normally distributed. The findings revealed significantly positive relationship at moderate level between preschool children’s independent learning behavior, their total school adjustment, self-directiveness and classroom participation; positive relationship at low level between independent learning behavior and school liking. Additionally, no statistically significant relationship was found between the independent learning behaviors of young children and their school avoidance levels. Independent learning behaviors of preschool children were found to be associated with four of the five variables related to school adjustment. Findings reveal the importance of supporting the school adjustment process of young children with independent learning behavior.
dc.description.abstractArastirmanin amaci, okul öncesi dönem çocuklarinin bagimsiz ögrenme davranislariyla okula uyum degiskenleri arasindaki iliskinin incelenmesidir. Çalisma grubunda Millî Egitim Bakanligi’na bagli okul öncesi egitim kurumlarina devam eden 5-6 yas grubundan 50 erkek ve 56 kiz olmak üzere 106 çocuk yer almaktadir. Arastirma kapsaminda Kisisel Bilgi Formu, Bagimsiz Ögrenme Davranislari Ölçegi ve 5-6 Yas Çocuklari Için Okula Uyum Ögretmen Degerlendirme Ölçegi olmak üzere üç ölçme araci kullanilmistir. Çalisma kapsaminda normal dagilan degiskenlerle ilgili Pearson Momentler Çarpimi, normal dagilmayan degiskenlerle ilgili Spearman Sira Farklari Korelasyon Katsayisi analiz teknigi uygulanmistir. Bulgulara göre okul öncesi dönem çocuklarinin bagimsiz ögrenme davranisi ile toplam okula uyum, kendi kendini yönetme ve isbirlikçi katilim arasinda olumlu yönde orta düzeyde; bagimsiz ögrenme davranisi ile okulu sevme arasinda olumlu yönde düsük düzeyde anlamli bir iliski oldugu belirlenmistir. Ek olarak, küçük çocuklarin bagimsiz ögrenme davranislari ile okuldan kaçinma düzeyleri arasinda istatistiksel açidan anlamli düzeyde iliski saptanmamistir. Okul öncesi dönem çocuklarinin bagimsiz ögrenme davranislari, okula uyum ile ilgili bes degiskenden dördü ile iliskili bulunmustur. Bulgular, küçük çocuklarin bagimsiz ögrenme davranislari ile okula uyum sürecinin desteklenmesinin önemini ortaya koymaktadir.
