Özet
Salvage excavations were conducted at several tumuli around Sinop by the Directorate of Sinop Archaeology Museum between 2013 and 2016. Excavations revealed that the tumuli were disturbed by illicit diggings, their grave inventories already robbed and therefore, artifacts are extremely scarce. However, all of the burial mounds contained tomb structures with certain elements that have a potential to shed light on tomb architecture of Sinope, and more generally Paphlagonia. The tomb structures are observed to be built of ashlar blocks and the roofing system is generally corbel vault, in some examples resembling almost a barrel-vault. An exact date cannot be provided for these tombs due to the lack of complete grave inventories. However, it seems possible to date the tomb structures generally to the Hellenistic Period according to architectural features. In addition, the geographical setting of the tumuli under investigation can be considered as an important factor that may provide information on ancient settlements. Location of the tumuli, their relations to their environs and the architectural properties of the tomb structures will be evaluated in this article.
