The Crimean War is a milestone for Nogai history in the northern Black Sea. It caused thousands of Nogais to leave their homes and migrate to the Ottoman Empire. The first migration movement started with the capture of Sheikh Shamil, the symbol of the resistance in the Caucasus, by the Russians in 1859, and migration continued intensely until 1862. The Nogais, who set out from the Crimea, landed in many regions of the Ottoman geography, especially in Istanbul. Sinop pier is also one of the ports where the Nogais set foot on the Ottoman lands. However, Sinop is not one of the permanent settlement areas determined for the Nogais. Therefore, the Ottoman Empire decided that some Circassians who had to immigrate in the same period would be resettled in Sinop in addition to the Nogais, who would take shelter in Sinop temporarily until they were transferred to the designated permanent settlement areas. Meanwhile, many Nogais lost their wealth and were miserable due to hunger and disease. This article examines the dispatch of the Nogai immigrants from Sinop to the permanent settlement areas and the aid made during their temporary resettlement in Sinop.
