The science laboratory should be defined as a setting in which students work cooperatively in small groups, investigate phenomena and have the chance of enhancing constructive social relationships as well as positive attitudes, cognitive growth. So having a valid source of information regarding the interactions, manipulation opportunities and physical environment in laboratories and assessing students’ perceptions of the laboratory learning environment is important. The purpose of the study was to examine prospective science teachers’ perceptions of the laboratory learning environment at the beginning and end of a three years period in faculty. Quantitative research methodologies were use with a one group pretest-posttest design. Forty-six prospective science teachers of 20 female and 26 male were participated in this study during 2005-06 and 2007-2008 school years. To determine the prospective science teachers’ conceptualizations about the learning environment in laboratories, the Science Laboratory Environment Inventory (SLEI) questionnaire was used. The results of this study show that prospective science teachers perceived physics laboratory environment generally positively except at dimension of “open endedness”. They believe that they could work with their classmate cohesively in laboratory, the rules they must obey were defined and presented clearly and the experiments they performed were integrated successfully with the content of related lessons. In order to develop more positive perceptions about physics laboratory activities in laboratory should be designed to be more open ended by taking into consideration the limitations of time and equipments.
