Özet
The contribution of Ziya Gökalp to folklore, is not only limited to describe the folklore and provide some information about its content. Even today, his views and methods in folklore studies are most referenced. For example, his thoughts about compilation of folk literature works and distinction of folklore's branches are still valid today. He went beyond his own period with his ideas which are still fundamentals for the next generation folklorists and even new Turkish State's institutions and organizations. He internalized western sociologists and philosophers that were effective in shaping his thoughts, however, he incorporated them with his own thought system and ideas instead of using them same as they are. In this essay, theories and approaches which are forming the ground to Gökalp's thoughts are evaluated in the frame of folklore studies. According to evolutionary theory, communities are similar to living organisms and they take shape and complex in a way that response to the different communities and changing needs of members. Even in this complex structure there is a need for some agents that support it and provide required tools. According to Ziya Gokalp, in the progress of society, for creation of new shared values from new formations, the basic requirement is sum of the society's values. It can be achieved on this basic ground that we can be called as alliance on ideals. Gokalp aims to turn direction to national values, to internalize the way of life and character of people and to integrate the new formations with this essence. The most functional material in the civilization to be established is particularly going to be oral literature works. Ziya Gokalp attributes important duties on oral literature works in creating new “social values”, as well as in establishing “an international civilization”. © 2014, Milli Folklor Dergisi.
