Öğe Being a queen bee, sister, or crab? A qualitative inquiry about the queen bee, sisterhood, and crabs in a barrel metaphors in Turkish Academia(IGI Global, 2023) Uçel, Ela Burcu; Yilmaz, Benan Kurt; Dalkiliç, Olca SürgevilGender inequalities and deeply rooted gender stereotypes create enormous challenges for women in working life. Female academics in Turkey face these challenges and try to overcome them. The current study focused on female leaders' experiences in academia about these challenges. The findings showed that in order to survive in the male dominant working life, some female academics establish sisterhood with other women and enjoy solidarity behaviors, and others try to cope with the hardships via showing crab and queen bee behaviors. Thus, the study presents a portrayal of these three metaphors, queen bee, sisterhood, and crabs in a barrel in academic circles in the country. © 2023, IGI Global. In this context, the purpose of this research is to reveal the views and feelings, thoughts and experienced by healthcare professionals. To reach healthcare workers, Izmir was chosen as one of the cities that experienced pandemic intensely, and the question form was used, inspired by the propositions found in Çirakoglu’s (2011) paper published in the Turkish Psychology Journal. Purposeful sampling method was used. A questionnaire to learn their feelings and thoughts about the COVID-19 outbreak was sent to 67 participants. The data was was analyzed with the Maxqda Pro 2020 Qualitative Data Analysis program, and the results were discussed. The contagiousness of the virus is at the top of the discourse of the healthcare professionals participating in the study regarding the COVID-19 outbreak. Due to the lack of a vaccine or preventive treatment to stop or reduce the transmission, as of the research period, attention is drawn to the fact that individuals maintain distance in isolation and collective areas in order to avoid the contagiousness of the virus. Participants emphasize that the epidemic causes concern to both the society and healthcare workers, and that the studies conducted in the world are delayed in combating the virus. It is thought to give insight into the symbolic representations of the words most frequently used by healthcare professionals regarding the COVID-19 virus. In addition to the prominence of social distance, isolation, quarantine and curfew methods in the fight against the virus, visualization of these methods in social media sharing also constitutes the symbolic representation of the virus.Öğe NEW MANAGEMENT PARADIGMS IN THE LIGHT OF GLOBAL CHANGES IN THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REPUBLIC(Sivas Iktisadi ve Idari Akademik Arastirmacilar Dernegi, 2023) Yilmaz, Benan Kurt; Uçel, Ela BurcuThe aim of this study is to draw attention to global changes and dynamics that Turkey is subject to with other nations. A qualitative research design was preferred due to the nature of the study and in-depth interviews and descriptive content analysis were employed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 career-oriented working mothers. The findings of the study have revealed that mothers regret many decisions they made to protect their careers, jobs and families (mainly babies) during this process. In addition, for all of these women, the motherhood decision appeared to be a trade-off between their career goals and motherhood wishes, at least for a period of time. Some have given up on their career progress for a certain period, some have faced the negative attitudes of the institutions they work for, like ignoring their motherhood experience and their babies, and others have been forced to pretend as if they were not mothers so that their careers would not be impaired. The study also concluded that women who struggle with the difficulties of being a mother in organizational life support each other more with a silent coalition which we call a motherhood coalition. Future research may focus on the reproductive decision processes and motherhood experiences of blue-collar women, as they can be quite different from career-oriented white-collar women's experiences.Öğe The Gendered Nature of Vulnerability in Higher Education: The Case of Türkiye(Taylor and Francis, 2025) Uçel, Ela Burcu; Yıldırım, Cansu; Kars-ünlüoğlu, Selen; Yilmaz, Benan KurtThis chapter explores women’s vulnerability in the Turkish higher education sector through an exploration of the gendered dimension of the “chilly climate” (Hall and Sandler, 1982) on the lived experiences of women academics to understand the subtle, as well as more overt, ways in which women are treated differently in the workplace. Using collaborative autoethnography, we explore the nature of female academics’ vulnerability and illustrate that most of these sources of vulnerability constitute covert, elusive, and ephemeral “micro-inequities” that can be concealed from formal policy interventions aimed at achieving gender equality. Moreover, our findings suggest that women in higher education often perform above expectations to prove their commitment to work and show that they will not prioritize marriage and maternity over employment. The cumulative impact of career dramatically exacerbates the consequences of vulnerability female academics face at different stages in their career and lives, impacting their well-being. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Hugo Gaggiotti and Isis Arlene Díaz-Carrión; individual chapters, the contributors.
