Öğe Implementation of Sustainable Mathematical Modelling Activities for 7th Grade Students within the Scope of Sustainable Development Education(Sinop University, 2024) Sahin, Neslihan; Bedir, Fatma NurIn this study, the learning environment created within the framework of sustainable mathematical modelling approach was carried out. For this purpose, 7th grade students were provided to work on model eliciting activities designed in the context of sustainability. The study was carried out with 9 7th grade students studying in a state secondary school in Sinop province in the 2023-2024 academic year. Firstly, the students, who were divided into three focus groups of 3, were first trained on the concepts of sustainability and then on the solution process of mathematical modelling activities. A selected group was given the Honeymoon Problem, which is a modelling activity. The modelling process of the children was audio and video recorded, the recordings were transcribed and analysed qualitatively using Blum and Ferri's (2009) modelling cycle. The results of the study revealed that the students were enthusiastic about solving problems related to sustainability, interpreted real life situations in solving sustainable problems, quantified qualitative data in the process, and developed a systematic but not generalisable model by focusing on the criteria of protecting nature and minimising the damage to the environment. It was concluded that both the development of mathematical modelling competencies was supported and awareness of environmental problems and the solution of sustainability problems were created through sustainable model eliciting activities.
