Öğe An Overview of the Factors Affecting the Migration of Sturgeons in Yesilirmak(Istanbul Univ Press, Fac Aquatic Sciences, 2018) Tiril, Serap Ustaoglu; Memis, DevrimThe Yesilirmak is one of the rivers in Turkey where sturgeons migrate for spawning. It originates in the Kosedag Mountains in Sivas and flows into the Black Sea at the plain of Carsamba. The Yesilirmak plays a major role in agricultural production and irrigation, and it also supplies energy due to the hydroelectric power plant (HPP). Serious structural changes and significant habitat loss for sturgeons and other fish species have occurred due to the dams and HPPs in the Yesilirmak, especially since the 1970s. It is also a known fact that fish passages in these constructions are not suitable for the sturgeons to pass through. Unfortunately, coastal regulations along the river have had a negative effect on the habitats. Although the Yesilirmak has lost quite a lot of its natural structure and its waterway gradually shortened due to the HPPs, sturgeons can still migrate upstream into it. Therefore, related sectors and stakeholders should consider the importance of the Yesilirmak in their planned activities for the future of sturgeons in Turkish waters. In this study, the major factors affecting the sturgeon migration in the Yesilirmak will be evaluated.Öğe Effects of dietary l-carnitine and chromium picolinate supplementations on performance and some serum parameters in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)(Springer, 2010) Selcuk, Zehra; Tiril, Serap Ustaoglu; Alagil, Fikret; Belen, Volkan; Salman, Mustafa; Cenesiz, Sena; Muglali, Omer HakanAn experiment was conducted to determine the effects of supplemental dietary l-carnitine, chromium picolinate (Cr-Pic) and their combination on growth performance and serum total protein, cholesterol, triglyceride and glucose of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). A total of 276 rainbow trout were randomly allocated to four groups. Fish (average initial body weight = 151 +/- A 1.69 g) were fed a basal diet without supplemental l-carnitine and chromium picolinate in the control group. The basal diet was supplemented with either 500 mg/kg l-carnitine, 1.6 mg/kg chromium picolinate or 500 mg/kg l-carnitine plus 1.6 mg/kg chromium picolinate for experimental groups 1 (C), 2 (Cr-Pic) and 3 (C + Cr-Pic), respectively. Fish were fed twice a day to apparent satiation for 58 days. Weight gain, growth rate, feed consumption and feed conversion ratio (feed/gain) were calculated for the whole period. At the end of the study, six fish were chosen randomly from each tank to represent the experiment and frozen at -20A degrees C for subsequent dorsal muscle analysis. The results showed no significant differences in final body weight, weight gain or feed conversion ratio among groups. There were also no significant differences in serum total protein, cholesterol, triglyceride or glucose concentrations among groups. Significantly higher lipid concentration of dorsal muscle was observed in experimental groups 1 and 3. In conclusion, supplemental dietary l-carnitine, chromium picolinate and their combination have no beneficial effects on improving growth performance and feed conversion ratio in rainbow trout. However, dietary l-carnitine slightly increased lipid concentration in dorsal muscle of rainbow trout.Öğe Effects of Extruded Red Lentil Meal on Growth Performance, Nutrient Digestibility, and Dorsal Muscle Composition in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)(Israeli Journal Of Aquaculture-Bamidgeh, 2010) Selcuk, Zehra; Tiril, Serap Ustaoglu; Alagil, Fikret; Salman, Mustafa; Muglali, Omer HakanThe aim of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of extruded red lentil meal as a plant protein source in a rainbow trout diet. Rainbow trout (n = 207) were randomly allocated to the control and two treatment groups. Diets were isonitrogenous and isocaloric. The control diet contained no extruded red lentil meal. Fish in treatments 1 and 2 were fed diets containing 10% and 15% extruded red lentil meal, respectively. Fish were fed twice a day to apparent satiation for 84 days. There were no significant (p>0.05) differences in weight gain, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio, dorsal muscle composition, or survival. Digestibility of nitrogen free extract+crude fiber was higher in the experimental groups than in the control. Thus, extruded red lentil meal can be considered as a protein source for rainbow trout diets up to the level of 15%.Öğe Effects of safflower oil supplementation in diet on growth performance and body fatty acid composition of turbot (Psetta maxima)(Springer, 2014) Altundag, Mehmet Sukru; Tiril, Serap Ustaoglu; Ozdemir, AtillaThe aim of the study was to investigate the effects of the diets that contain safflower oil and fish oil as lipid sources, on growth, feed conversion and body composition in turbot (Psetta maxima). Two iso-nitrogenous and iso-lipidic diets (55 % protein and 14 % lipid) were prepared that include 100 % fish oil (FO group) and 100 % safflower oil (SFO group) for turbots with average weight of 62.21 +/- A 1.28 g, and fish were fed with these diets for 104 days. At the end of the experiment, the weight gain, specific growth rate and feed conversion ratio were the highest in SFO group than in FO group (p < 0.05). Fatty acid composition of fish body reflected the fatty acid composition determined in the experimental diets. The amounts of palmitic acid (PA; C16:0), oleic acid (OA; C18:1n-9), linoleic acid (LA; C18:2n-6) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; C22:6n-3) were dominant fatty acids in fish body. It was confirmed that the usage of safflower oil instead of fish oil in turbot feed did not generate any negative effects on growth, feed conversion and the values regarding the growth performance.
