    The fishery structure, economic value and consumption of the African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus, Burchell, 1822) From Asi River, Antakya

    This study was planned to evaluate the fisheries structure, economic value and consumption of the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) living in the Asi River. For this purpose, the study was carried out in 3 stages between December 2018 and March 2019. In the first stage, face-to-face interviews were conducted with the local fishermen to reveal the fishing gear and main fishing regions of catfish. In the second stage, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 12 business owners engaged in the retail sale of fisheries products in order to analyze the economic value of African catfish in the region. In the third and final stage, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 180 consumers to evaluate the catfish consumption habits of locals in the region. According to the data obtained, the hunting areas where intensive African catfish fishing have been carried out in the Asi River was determined, and the technical drawings of the most intensively used fishing gear were presented. It has been calculated that the average retail price of African catfish is 14.25 TRY (for December 2018-March 2019). It was understood that the more than half of the locals consume catfish once a week, and all of the subjects consume at least once a month. As a result, due to the wide catching area, high economic value and intense consumption in the region, intensive or extensive aquaculture will relieve the natural stocks.
