Beach litter contamination of the Turkish middle Black Sea coasts: Spatial and temporal variation, composition, and possible sources
(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2022) Bat, Levent; Oztekin, Aysah; Ozturk, Dilara Kaya; Gurbuzer, Pinar; Ozsandikci, Ugur; Eyuboglu, Bora; Oztekin, Hasan Can
Marine litter is one of the biggest environmental problems nowadays. Sinop, is located in the heart of Turkiye's Black Sea coast, has a small population, and is a popular fishing and tourist destination. In this study, marine litter amount, composition, and possible sources were investigated, and seasonal comparisons were made be-tween in Sinop beaches. Marine litter amount was found as 0.29-7.67 items.m(-2) and 3.46-49.09 g.m(-2) and beaches were classified as moderate to extremely dirty. Plastics were the highest ratio (88.14-98.46 %) and plastic pieces 2.5 > < 50 cm were the major litter type. The major possible litter source was improper waste disposal (33.36 %) and litter items originated from mainly land-based sources (74.13 %). The result of this study shows that there is a significant litter problem on the coasts. The solution of this problem can be possible to take rational measures against marine litter pollution with education and management policies.

Comprehensive risk assessment of metals in surface sediments of the Southern Black Sea coastal and transition waters
(Elsevier, 2024) Bat, Levent; Sahin, Fatih; Oztekin, Aysah; Ozsandikci, Ugur; Ozkan, Ebru Yesim
This study was carried out to determine metal levels accumulated in the sediments collected from the transitional and coastal waters of the southern Black Sea. Samples were taken from 32 stations in May and September 2018. The concentrations of elements were measured by an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrophotometer (ICPMS). Enrichment Factor (EF), Geo -accumulation Index (Igeo), Pollution Load Index (PLI), Contamination Factor (C f ), and Modified Degree of Contamination (mC d ) were applied to the data for assessing the sediment quality. Associations between the variables were also revealed by factor analysis. Igeo of metals are obtained in coastal sediments only when Hg in May and Cr in September are classified as moderately polluted. PLIs exceeded one at stations in the industrial zone, indicating getting worse. It is necessary to prevent pollution from industrial, domestic, and agricultural sources and to control agricultural lands.

Density distribution and some biological properties of veined rapa whelk Rapana venosa (Valenciennes, 1846) populations in south central Black Sea
(Cahiers De Biologie Marine, 2017) Gonener, Sedat; Ozsandikci, Ugur
Rapana venosa is a gastropod species, which has an extremely high commercial importance for Black Sea ecosystem since 1940s and for Turkish fisheries industry since 1985. The study that aims to ensure sustainability of whelks, an alternative fisheries resource, was carried out in coast of South Central Black Sea between September and December 2015. Biological properties of veined rapa whelk populations were determined and density distribution maps of Rapana venosa and by-catch species were created from samplings collected with commercial dredges. According to the results, length, weight and condition factor values of Rapana venosa individuals obtained in Sinop region, were greater than those of obtained in Samsun region. Besides, the densities of Rapana venosa (5812 +/- 189 kg.km(-2)) and by-catch species (8.2 +/- 0.5 ind.haul(-1)) in Sinop were higher than those in Samsun (respectively, 4368 +/- 137 kg.km(-2) and 6.2 +/- 0.4 ind.haul(-1)).

(Turkish Marine Research Foundation-Tudav, 2020) Kasapoglu, Nazli; Dagtekin, Murat; Ilhan, Salih; Erik, Gokhan; Ozsandikci, Ugur; Buyukdeveci, Ferhat
This study was conducted to investigate seafloor marine litter abundance between Samsun (Yakakent) and Hopa within the scope of Integrated Marine Pollution Monitoring Project (CSB/CEDIDGM-TUBITAK/MAM) in summer 2019. Totally, the trawl hauling operations were successfully performed in 30 stations. The works were done according to the MEDITS protocol: sampling was done at 3 different depths (0-20 m, 20-50 m and 50-100 m), marine litter was classified in 9 categories. At all sampling stations marine litter was assessed by weight and amount. The most common marine litter group was L2 tire/rubber by weight (53%) and amount (67%) when L1 plastic group - 25% by weight and L5 fabric and natural fibres - 12% by amount. Especially in the L2 group, the car and truck tires were dominated in weight of CB5 (Trabzon- Surmene) and CB3 (Trabzon) stations.

Effectiveness of Pingers on the Harbour Porpoise Phocoena phocoena relicta Abel, 1905 (Cetacea: Phocoenidae) in Turkey as Revealed by Shore-based Observations
(Inst Zoology, Bas, 2020) Ozsandikci, Ugur; Gonener, Sedat
The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of pinger devices on the Black-Sea harbour porpoises Phocoena phocoena relicta. The study was carried out in Sinop, Turkey. between 16 July and 22 October 2016. A buoy without a pinger device was placed and observations were carried out during 26 days (53.2 hour) throughout the control period. Subsequently. a pinger was placed on the buoy and 28 days (58 hour) of experiment period was performed. During the study, the average distances, closest observed approaches (COA) and frequency of porpoise sightings in the zone of vulnerability. a 100 m buffer around the buoy, have been calculated and compared between the two periods. According to this. the average distance increased from 775.35 +/- 38.96 m during the control period to 1536.05 +/- 81.33 m during the experiment period (p<0.05). Distances of COA were calculated for control and experiment periods, respectively, 443.86 +/- 94.18 m and 724.34 +/- 98.89 m. Porpoises entered the zone of vulnerability significantly more frequently during the experiment period as compared to the control period (p<0.05). Pingers used in the study were found to be effective on keeping porpoises away from the area. However. a possible habituation effect can be revealed depending on the long-term use of these devices.

(2018) Bat, Levent; Şahin, Fatih; Sezgin, Murat; Gönener, Sedat; Erdem, Ercan; Ozsandikci, Ugur
ABSTRACTObjective: The current work was carried out between 2013-2014 during the fishing periods to evaluate certain fish aggloremations within 3 miles of the coastal zone. Therefore, some basic characteristics of fish populations along the Inceburun coast of the Sinop province of the Black Sea were examined.Materials and Methods: Data was collected from 5 trawl operations in the Sinop-Inceburun Region of the Black Sea at depths of 20 to 39 meters at 5 different locations. Biometric measurements of each species was made. A literature searchwas performed to gather information about the status of threatened fish species found in the region. The length-weight parameters of 4 commercial fish species were estimated. Results: During the fishing season between 1st September 2013 and 15th April 2014 different fish species were captured depending on the season and climate. In these surveys, 16 teleost species from 15 families, 2 elasmobranch species from2 families and 2 species of invertebrates were recorded from 5 different stations. In these surveys random samples of red mullet, bluefish, horse mackerel, turbot etc. were collected from 5 different stations. The total mean CPUA was estimated at425.30 kg/km2.Conclusion: The Black Sea areas including those around the Sinop coast have an important effect on the entire production of sea fish of the Turkish fishery. In addition, Sinop fisheries generate significant fishery production supporting logistics and employment. In the Sinop peninsula, there is an increasing trend towards the production of commercial species of the Black Sea.

Seasonal abundance estimates of cetaceans in the southern Black Sea (Sinop), Türkiye
(Wiley, 2024) Ozsandikci, Ugur; Ozdemir, Suleyman
The availability of reliable information on the abundance and distribution of threatened species is fundamental to evaluating their conservation status and taking the necessary measures to implement effective management. The seasonal abundance and distribution of cetaceans in the Sinop region, one of the essential fishing areas of the Black Sea, were estimated with line-transect data. Dedicated boat-based visual observations were conducted in four seasons between May 2019 and March 2020. Average estimates of abundance in the region over all seasons were 1,058 individuals for Black Sea harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena relicta; CV = 19.25%, 95% CI[725, 1,542]), 188 individuals for Black Sea bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus ponticus; CV = 21.67%, 95% CI[123, 289]), and 311 individuals for Black Sea common dolphin (Delphinus delphis ponticus; CV = 16.77%, 95% CI[123, 427]). The highest estimates for all three species were obtained in the spring. Harbor porpoises and bottlenose dolphins were present in the study area throughout the year, while common dolphins left the region in winter. These findings offer valuable insights that can guide and inform future conservation strategies, aligning with national and international frameworks for the protection of these cetacean species.
