    A CASE STUDY: ECOLOGICAL QUALITY STATUS OF SUSURLUK RIVER BASIN (MARMARA SEA)

    This study was carried out with the aim of determining the Ecological Quality Status (EQS) of coastal transitional waters of Susurluk River Basin (Marmara Sea). Macrozoobenthic invertebrate material was collected in May of 2013 from six stations in triplicate by means of a van Veen grab. Shannon-Weaver Diversity Index and associated Pielou's Evenness Index together with biotic indices AMBI and BENTIX were calculated. Some ecological variables (Secchi disc depth, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, silica, Chlorophyll-a) of the sea water and total organic carbon of the sediment were also measured. Ecological Quality Status at each station was assessed by considering individual dominancy of sensitive and tolerant species, results from univariate/biotic indexes and some ecological parameters. When EQS of the basin is evaluated as a whole, it was seen that there was not any station in Good or High EQS at the study area, stations were in Poor or Bad EQS at the stations where the River meets the sea, while the stations off the River mouth were in Moderate EQS. Both species pattern of macrozoobenthic invertebrate communities and ecological parameters determined in the basin such as TOC and nutrients present the negative impacts of the River over the basin and indicate the necessity of efficient precautions to be taken.

    Benthic amphipod (Crustacea) fauna of the Bandirma and Erdek Gulfs and some environmental factors affecting their distribution

    This study aims to determine the environmental factors affecting the fauna and distribution of benthic amphipod species inhabiting in the Bandirma and Erdek Gulfs which are located on the south of the Marmara Sea. Total of 66 species belonging to 22 families were identified after analyzing the samples collected seasonally from the depths ranging between 1 and 30 m between 2007-2008. According to the data gathered from the literature, it was determined that one species (Bathyporeia elegans Watkin, 1938) was a new record for the Turkish seas and 37 species for the Marmara Sea. In the Bandirma Gulf, of the ecological variables of the environment temperature was determined to range between 6.6-27 degrees C, salinity between 21.32-36.03 psu, dissolved oxygen between 4.04-11.26 mg l(-1) and pH between 8.00-8.38. In the Erdek Gulf, temperature ranged between 6.7 and 27 degrees C, salinity between 21.93-35.54%, dissolved oxygen between 3.67-13.26 mg l(-1) and pH between 8.06-8.36. In the surface sediment at the sampling stations of the Bandirma Gulf, total organic carbon values were between 0.07-4.42%, total calcium carbonate between 0.88-84.82%, total phosphorus between 609-12740 mu g g(-1) and mud percentage between 1.38-79.93%. In the Erdek Gulf, total organic carbon ranged between 0.08-2.89%, total calcium carbonate between 0.74-80.06%, total phosphorus between 376-3614 mu g g(-1) and mud percentage between 2.12-95.65%.

    Long-term changes and causes of biota assemblages in the southern Black Sea coasts

    The presence of biota in the Black Sea is mostly determined by seawater temperature and salinity. The consensus of many scientists doing research on global warming is that in 2100, the average air temperature will be increase than today's values. With climate changing, precipitation rates will change due to the Black Sea water temperature and the changing atmospheric regime, causing an unbalanced entry of nutrients into the sea, and as a result, excessive plankton proliferation may occur. This may mean that the habitats of the species in the Black Sea are further limited. The increases in sea levels may not be serious, but there is no doubt that there will be some increases. These increases will affect the coastal ecosystem, especially the rich living life in the region where the waves hit the shore, which we call the wave zone, will be adversely affected. These predictions should be followed up with regular scientific monitoring studies and it should be investigated how biota from invertebrates to fish are affected by the changes. This review explored and discussed the long-term changes and causes of biota communities on the southern coast of the Black Sea.
