Öğe A CASE STUDY: ECOLOGICAL QUALITY STATUS OF SUSURLUK RIVER BASIN (MARMARA SEA)(Parlar Scientific Publications (P S P), 2019) Albayrak, Serhat; Caglar, Senem; Mulayim, Aysegul; Kurt-Sahin, Guley; Balkis, Husamettin; Cinar, Nur Findik; Atabay, HakanThis study was carried out with the aim of determining the Ecological Quality Status (EQS) of coastal transitional waters of Susurluk River Basin (Marmara Sea). Macrozoobenthic invertebrate material was collected in May of 2013 from six stations in triplicate by means of a van Veen grab. Shannon-Weaver Diversity Index and associated Pielou's Evenness Index together with biotic indices AMBI and BENTIX were calculated. Some ecological variables (Secchi disc depth, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, silica, Chlorophyll-a) of the sea water and total organic carbon of the sediment were also measured. Ecological Quality Status at each station was assessed by considering individual dominancy of sensitive and tolerant species, results from univariate/biotic indexes and some ecological parameters. When EQS of the basin is evaluated as a whole, it was seen that there was not any station in Good or High EQS at the study area, stations were in Poor or Bad EQS at the stations where the River meets the sea, while the stations off the River mouth were in Moderate EQS. Both species pattern of macrozoobenthic invertebrate communities and ecological parameters determined in the basin such as TOC and nutrients present the negative impacts of the River over the basin and indicate the necessity of efficient precautions to be taken.Öğe Distribution of Eunicidae (Annelida: Polychaeta) along the Levantine coast of Turkey, with special emphasis on alien species(Springer Heidelberg, 2017) Kurt-Sahin, Guley; Cinar, Melih ErtanDistributional features of Eunicidae (Annelida, Polychaeta) along the Levantine coast of Turkey were assessed based on data derived from qualitative and quantitative samples collected in various substrata, habitat and depths (0-100 m). The examined material contained 12 species and 4644 individuals belonging to five genera (Eunice, Leodice, Lysidice, Marphysa and Palola). Marphysa was represented by the highest number of species and Lysidice by the highest number of individuals in the area. The dominant species were Lysidice ninetta, L. margaritacea and Leodice antennata; the most frequent species were Leodice antennata, Lysidice ninetta and L. unicornis among the stations. The Lessepsian migrants, Leodice antennata and Palola valida, seem to have been well established and formed dense populations (max. 725 and 100 ind.m(-2), respectively) in the area. The distribution of L. antennata seems to be related to the total inorganic nitrogen and silica concentrations in the water column. The ratio between alien and native species' abundances increased from the western to the eastern parts of the region.Öğe Macrobenthic fauna associated with the invasive alien species Brachidontes pharaonis (Mollusca: Bivalvia) in the Levantine Sea (Turkey)(Cambridge Univ Press, 2017) Cinar, Melih Ertan; Bakir, Kerem; Ozturk, Bilal; Katagan, Tuncer; Dogan, Alper; Acik, Sermin; Kurt-Sahin, GuleyThe invasive alien mytilid species, Brachidontes pharaonis, forms a biogenic habitat in the mediolittoral and upper-infralittoral zones of the Levantine Sea, hosting a number of alien and native species. Examinations of samples taken from dense, continuous mussel beds at seven stations along the coast of northern Levantine Sea yielded 187 macro-benthic invertebrate species belonging to 11 taxonomic groups. Polychaeta accounted for 46% and 37% of the total number of species and individuals, respectively. The top three dominant species in the mussel beds were Stenothoe gallensis, Spirobranchus kraussi and Mytilaster minimus. The species with the highest frequency values on the mussel beds were Pseudonereis anomala, Phascolosoma stephensoni and Elasmopus pocillimanus. The highest density and biomass of the associated fauna were estimated as 42,550 ind m(-2) and 1503 wwt g m(-2), respectively. The species number in samples varied between 14 and 47 species. The environmental variables best explaining variations in zoobenthic community structures were salinity, dissolved oxygen and total inorganic nitrogen in the water column. The biotic indices, TUBI and ALEX, classified the ecological status of one or two stations as moderate or poor, based on the relative abundances of ecological and zoogeographic groups, respectively. A total of 21 alien species were found to be associated with the mussel bed, of which Syllis ergeni is being newly considered as a new established alien species for the Mediterranean Sea. The maximum density of associated alien species was calculated as 30,300 ind m(-2). The alien species assemblages were greatly affected by salinity and total inorganic nitrogen.Öğe Macrozoobenthic community structure of Igneada region in Turkey (the southwestern Black Sea)(Walter De Gruyter Gmbh, 2017) Kurt-Sahin, Guley; Sezgin, Murat; Unluer, Fikriye; Ozturk, Bilal; Cavdar, Ertan; Dagli, ErtanThe present study deals with macrozoobenthic species on soft substrates in Igneada (Turkish coast of the Black Sea). Benthic samples were collected seasonally at three stations between 2012 and 2013. A total of 155 species belonging to seven taxa (Turbellaria, Nemertea, Nematoda, Oligochaeta, Polychaeta, Crustacea, Phoronida, Mollusca, Hemichordata) were identified. Of these, four species are new records for the Black Sea fauna, 15 species are new to the Turkish coast of the Black Sea; and two species are new to the Turkish Seas. Polychaeta was the most representative taxon in the study area - it was represented by 58 species (39% of the total number of species). In terms of the number of individuals, Mollusca were the dominant taxon in all seasons (82% of the total number of individuals). In addition, four species, namely Pisione remota, Pterocirrus macroceros, Polydora cornuta and Saccocirrus papillocercus, are new records for the Black Sea coast of Turkey.
