Öğe Electron and photon reconstruction and identification with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC(Iop Publishing Ltd, 2021) Sirunyan, A. Escalante; Fruehwirth, R.The performance is presented of the reconstruction and identification algorithms for electrons and photons with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The reported results are based on proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and recorded in 2016-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 fb(-1). Results obtained from lead-lead collision data collected at root S-NN = 5.02 TeV are also presented. Innovative techniques are used to reconstruct the electron and photon signals in the detector and to optimize the energy resolution. Events with electrons and photons in the final state are used to measure the energy resolution and energy scale uncertainty in the recorded events. The measured energy resolution for electrons produced in Z boson decays in proton-proton collision data ranges from 2 to 5%, depending on electron pseudorapidity and energy loss through bremsstrahlung in the detector material. The energy scale in the same range of energies is measured with an uncertainty smaller than 0.1 (0.3)% in the barrel (endcap) region in proton-proton collisions and better than 1(3)% in the barrel (endcap) region in heavy ion collisions. The timing resolution for electrons from Z boson decays with the full 2016-2018 proton-proton collision data set is measured to be 200 ps.Öğe First measurement of the cross section for top quark pair production with additional charm jets using dileptonic final states in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV(Elsevier, 2021) Sirunyan, A. Escalante; Fruehwirth, R.The first measurement of the inclusive cross section for top quark pairs (tt) produced in association with two additional charm jets is presented. The analysis uses the dileptonic final states of tt events produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb-1, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. A new charm jet identification algorithm provides input to a neural network that is trained to distinguish among tt events with two additional charm (ttcc), bottom (ttbb), and light-flavour or gluon (ttLL) jets. By means of a template fitting procedure, the inclusive ttcc, ttbb, and ttLL cross sections are simultaneously measured, together with their ratios to the inclusive tt + two jets cross section. This provides measurements of the ttcc and ttbb cross sections of 10.1 +/- 1.2 (stat) +/- 1.4 (syst) pb and 4.54 +/- 0.35 (stat) +/- 0.56 (syst) pb, respectively, in the full phase space. The results are compared and found to be consistent with predictions from two different matrix element generators with next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics, interfaced with a parton shower simulation. Funded by SCOAP3.Öğe Search for CP violating top quark couplings in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV(Springer, 2023) Tumasyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Escalante Del Valle, A.; Fruehwirth, R.Results are presented from a search for CP violation in top quark pair production, using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV. The data used for this analysis consist of final states with two charged leptons collected by the CMS experiment, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The search uses two observables, O-1 and O-3, which are Lorentz scalars. The observable O-1 is constructed from the four-momenta of the charged leptons and the reconstructed top quarks, while O-3 consists of the four-momenta of the charged leptons and the b quarks originating from the top quarks. Asymmetries in these observables are sensitive to CP violation, and their measurement is used to determine the chromoelectric dipole moment of the top quark. The results are consistent with the expectation from the standard model.Öğe Two-particle azimuthal correlations in γp interactions using pPb collisions at √sNN=8.16 TeV(Elsevier, 2023) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. Escalante; Fruehwirth, R.; Jeitler, M.The first measurements of the Fourier coefficients (V-n Delta) of the azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons emitted from photon-proton (gamma p) interactions are presented. The data are extracted from 68.8nb(-1) of ultra-peripheral proton-lead (pPb) collisions at root s(NN)= 8.16 TeV using the CMS detector. The high energy lead ions produce a flux of photons that can interact with the oncoming proton. This gamma p system provides a set of unique initial conditions with multiplicity lower than in photon-lead collisions but comparable to recent electron-positron and electron-proton data. The V-n Delta coefficients are presented in ranges of event multiplicity and transverse momentum (p(T)) and are compared to corresponding hadronic minimum bias pPb results. For a given multiplicity range, the mean p(T) of charged particles is smaller in gamma p than in pPb collisions. For both the gamma p and pPb samples, V-1 Delta is negative, V-2 Delta is positive, and V-3 Delta consistent with 0. For each multiplicity and p(T) range, V-2 Delta is larger for gamma p events.
