Öğe Biomedical Informatics from Big Data Perspective: Expectations and Challenges(Ieee, 2018) Mersinkaya, Ismail; Ekren, GulayBiomedical data is generated in large quantities every day not just by biomedical devices but also by hospital equipments and other resources as well as mobile devices. One of the new technologies that biomedical computing has been working on is called as big data. However, this large amount of data (big data) is rapidly disappearing since it is not usually used or stored for research purposes. Today, big data technology finds various application areas in research fields such as biomedical and healthcare services. Biomedical Informatics, as a subfield of biomedical research, is one of the favorite areas in where big data analyzes are frequently used. Recently, studies point out that the the enormous potential of big data and using it in biomedical research is quite important. The aim of this study is to identify the expectations and challenges in biomedical informatics in terms of big data technology by classifying data gathering, data storage, data management and data analysis. In this line, an organizational model is offered for Biomedical Informatics in terms of big data.Öğe Existing Standards and Programs for Use in Mobile Augmented Reality(Igi Global, 2017) Ekren, Gulay; Keskin, Nilgun OzdamarAugmented reality (AR) brings flexibility and openness to learning. It also strengthens connections between learners in multiple contexts by adding a new dimension to mobile learning. As well, AR facilitates the learning process of the learners by bringing different disciplines together with education. This chapter focuses on technologies, tools, programs, operating systems, a number of standards as well as some parts of web infrastructure standards for use in mobile AR applications and then discusses the current state, issues, and direction of the development and the use of these apps. The purpose of this chapter is to provide information on that can be used by developers of mobile AR applications for learning and to assist educators and instructional designers in developing mobile augmented reality apps for learning by using AR development tools that provide them to create custom mobile AR applications without programming skills.Öğe Understanding of Leadership in Distance Education Management(Igi Global, 2017) Ekren, Gulay; Karatas, Sercin; Demiray, UgurToday, distance education institutions are different from other traditional organizational structures because they require a virtual structuring. Therefore, the concept and practice of educational leadership is considered as a special area in distance education management process. As a requirement of 21st century, distance education leadership has been seen as a matter or necessity to be developed and to be investigated in the management of distance education. In this chapter, it is aimed to bring the insights of various researchers to define characteristics or qualifications of leadership in distance education, which are or should be different from traditional educational leadership through a literature review relevant to leadership and theories in leadership, educational leadership, and distance education leadership.
