Öğe A measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the diphoton decay channel(Elsevier, 2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.; Dragicevic, M.A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel is presented. This analysis is based on 35.9 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data collected during the 2016 LHC running period, with the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. A refined detector calibration and new analysis techniques have been used to improve the precision of this measurement. The Higgs boson mass is measured to be m(H) = 125.78 +/- 0.26GeV. This is combined with a measurement of m(H) already performed in the H -> ZZ -> 4l decay channel using the same data set, giving m(H) = 125.46 +/- 0.16GeV. This result, when further combined with an earlier measurement of m(H) using data collected in 2011 and 2012 with the CMS detector, gives a value for the Higgs boson mass of m(H) = 125.38 +/- 0.14GeV. This is currently the most precise measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson. (C) 2020 The Author(s). M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.A search in an all-jet final state for new massive resonances decaying to WW, WZ, or ZZ boson pairs using a novel analysis method is presented. The analysis is performed on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.3 fb(-1) recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV. The search is focussed on potential narrow-width resonances with masses above 1.2TeV, where the decay products of each W or Z boson are expected to be collimated into a single, large-radius jet. The signal is extracted using a three-dimensional maximum likelihood fit of the two jet masses and the dijet invariant mass, yielding an improvement in sensitivity of up to 30% relative to previous search methods. No excess is observed above the estimated standard model background. In a heavy vector triplet model, spin-1 Z' and W' resonances with masses below 3.5 and 3.8TeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level. In a bulk graviton model, upper limits on cross sections are set between 27 and 0.2 fb for resonance masses between 1.2 and 5.2TeV, respectively. The limits presented in this paper are the best to date in the dijet final state.Öğe A search for pair production of new light bosons decaying into muons in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV(Elsevier, 2019) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.A search for new light bosons decaying into muon pairs is presented using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy root s = 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The search is model independent, only requiring the pair production of a new light boson and its subsequent decay to a pair of muons. No significant deviation from the predicted background is observed. A model independent limit is set on the product of the production cross section times branching fraction to dimuons squared times acceptance as a function of new light boson mass. This limit varies between 0.15 and 0.39 fb over a range of new light boson masses from 0.25 to 8.5 GeV. It is then interpreted in the context of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model and a dark supersymmetry model that allows for nonnegligible light boson lifetimes. In both cases, there is significant improvement over previously published limits. (C) 2019 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.Öğe A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to charm quarks(Springer, 2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Eroe, J.A direct search for the standard model Higgs boson, H, produced in association with a vector boson, V (W or Z), and decaying to a charm quark pair is presented. The search uses a data set of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1), collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016, at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The search is carried out in mutually exclusive channels targeting specific decays of the vector bosons: W -> l nu, Z -> ll, and Z -> nu nu, where l is an electron or a muon. To fully exploit the topology of the H boson decay, two strategies are followed. In the first one, targeting lower vector boson transverse momentum, the H boson candidate is reconstructed via two resolved jets arising from the two charm quarks from the H boson decay. A second strategy identifies the case where the two charm quark jets from the H boson decay merge to form a single jet, which generally only occurs when the vector boson has higher transverse momentum. Both strategies make use of novel methods for charm jet identification, while jet substructure techniques are also exploited to suppress the background in the merged-jet topology. The two analyses are combined to yield a 95% confidence level observed (expected) upper limit on the cross section sigma(VH) corresponding to 70 (37) times the standard model prediction.Öğe An embedding technique to determine ττ backgrounds in proton-proton collision data(Iop Publishing Ltd, 2019) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.An embedding technique is presented to estimate standard model tau tau backgrounds from data with minimal simulation input. In the data, the muons are removed from reconstructed mu mu events and replaced with simulated tau leptons with the same kinematic properties. In this way, a set of hybrid events is obtained that does not rely on simulation except for the decay of the tau leptons. The challenges in describing the underlying event or the production of associated jets in the simulation are avoided. The technique described in this paper was developed for CMS. Its validation and the inherent uncertainties are also discussed. The demonstration of the performance of the technique is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by CMS in 2017 at root s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb(-1).Öğe Angular analysis of the decay B+ → K+μ+μ- in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2018) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.The angular distribution of the flavor-changing neutral current decay B+ -> K+mu(+)mu(-) is studied in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The analysis is based on data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.5 fb(-1). The forward-backward asymmetry A(FB) of the dimuon system and the contribution F-H from the pseudoscalar, scalar, and tensor amplitudes to the decay width are measured as a function of the dimuon mass squared. The measurements are consistent with the standard model expectations.Öğe Angular analysis of the decay B+→ K*(892)+μ+μ- in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV(Springer, 2021) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.Angular distributions of the decay B+-> K*(892)(+)mu(+)mu(-) are studied using events collected with the CMS detector in root s = 8 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.0 fb(-1). The forward-backward asymmetry of the muons and the longitudinal polarization of the K*(892)(+) meson are determined as a function of the square of the dimuon invariant mass. These are the first results from this exclusive decay mode and are in agreement with a standard model prediction.Öğe Azimuthal correlations for inclusive 2-jet, 3-jet, and 4-jet events in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV(Springer, 2018) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.Azimuthal correlations between the two jets with the largest transverse momenta p(T) in inclusive 2-, 3-, and 4-jet events are presented for several regions of the leading jet p(T) up to 4 TeV. For 3- and 4-jet scenarios, measurements of the minimum azimuthal angles between any two of the three or four leading p(T) jets are also presented. The analysis is based on data from proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS Collaboration at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). Calculations based on leading-order matrix elements supplemented with parton showering and hadronization do not fully describe the data, so next-to-leading-order calculations matched with parton shower and hadronization models are needed to better describe the measured distributions. Furthermore, we show that azimuthal jet correlations are sensitive to details of the parton showering, hadronization, and multiparton interactions. Anext-to-leading-order calculation matched with parton showers in the MC@NLO method, as implemented in HERWIG 7, gives a better overall description of the measurements than the powheg method.Öğe Azimuthal separation in nearly back-to-back jet topologies in inclusive 2-and 3-jet events in pp collisions at √s=13TeV(Springer, 2019) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.A measurement for inclusive 2- and 3-jet events of the azimuthal correlation between the two jets with the largest transverse momenta, Delta phi(12), is presented. The measurement considers events where the two leading jets are nearly collinear (back-to-back) in the transverse plane and is performed for several ranges of the leading jet transverse momentum. Proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1) are used. Predictions based on calculations using matrix elements at leading-order and next-to-leading-order accuracy in perturbative quantum chromodynamics supplemented with leading-log parton showers and hadronization are generally in agreement with themeasurements. Discrepancies between the measurement and theoretical predictions are as large as 15%, mainly in the region 177 degrees < Delta phi(12) < 180 degrees. The 2- and 3-jet measurements are not simultaneously described by any of models.Öğe Beyond nPDFs effects : Prompt J/ψ and ψ(2S) production in pPb and pp collisions(Elsevier, 2019) Oh, Geonhee; Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.A multi-dimensional analysis of prompt charmonia in pp and pPb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector is presented. The pPb differential cross-sections of prompt J/psi are shown in a wide kinematic region, for transverse momentum p(T) spanning from 2 to 30 GeV/c and a rapidity interval between -2.4 to 1.93 in the center of mass of the collision. The final results on prompt psi/(2S) meson production cross section in pp and pPb collisions at 5.02 TeV are also reported as a function of p(T) and rapidity, for p(T) from 4 to 30 GeV/c. The nuclear modification factor is found to be smaller than that of prompt J/psi in all measured bins, especially at low p(T) and at backward rapidity. Such a different behaviour between the ground and excited states cannot be reproduced considering nPDF effects alone.Öğe Bose-Einstein correlations in pp, pPb, and PbPb collisions at √sNN=0.9-7 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2018) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.Quantum-statistical (Bose-Einstein) two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at root s = 0.9, 2.76, and 7 TeV, as well as in pPb and peripheral PbPb collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies of 5.02 and 2.76 TeV, respectively, using the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Separate analyses are performed for same-sign unidentified charged particles as well as for same-sign pions and kaons identified via their energy loss in the silicon tracker. The characteristics of the one-, two-, and three-dimensional correlation functions are studied as functions of the pair average transverse momentum (k(T)) and the charged-particle multiplicity in the event. For all systems, the extracted correlation radii steadily increase with the event multiplicity, and decrease with increasing k(T). The radii are in the range 1-5 fm, the largest values corresponding to very high multiplicity pPb interactions and to peripheral PbPb collisions with multiplicities similar to those seen in pPb data. It is also observed that the dependencies of the radii on multiplicity and k(T) largely factorize. At the same multiplicity, the radii are relatively independent of the colliding system and center-of-mass energy.Öğe Bose-Einstein correlations of charged hadrons in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV(Springer, 2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.Bose-Einstein correlations of charged hadrons are measured over a broad multiplicity range, from a few particles up to about 250 reconstructed charged hadrons in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV. The results are based on data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC during runs with a special low-pileup configuration. Three analysis techniques with different degrees of dependence on simulations are used to remove the non-Bose-Einstein background from the correlation functions. All three methods give consistent results. The measured lengths of homogeneity are studied as functions of particle multiplicity as well as average pair transverse momentum and mass. The results are compared with data from both CMS and ATLAS at s = 7 TeV, as well as with theoretical predictions.Öğe Calibration of the CMS hadron calorimeters using proton-proton collision data at √s=13 TeV(Iop Publishing Ltd, 2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.; Dragicevic, M.Methods are presented for calibrating the hadron calorimeter system of theCMSetector at the LHC. The hadron calorimeters of the CMS experiment are sampling calorimeters of brass and scintillator, and are in the form of one central detector and two endcaps. These calorimeters cover pseudorapidities vertical bar eta vertical bar < 3 and are positioned inside the solenoidal magnet. An outer calorimeter, outside the magnet coil, covers vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.26, and a steel and quartz-fiber Cherenkov forward calorimeter extends the coverage to vertical bar eta vertical bar < 5.19. The initial calibration of the calorimeters was based on results from test beams, augmented with the use of radioactive sources and lasers. The calibration was improved substantially using proton-proton collision data collected at root s = 7, 8, and 13 TeV, as well as cosmic ray muon data collected during the periods when the LHC beams were not present. The present calibration is performed using the 13 TeV data collected during 2016 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The intercalibration of channels exploits the approximate uniformity of energy collection over the azimuthal angle. The absolute energy scale of the central and endcap calorimeters is set using isolated charged hadrons. The energy scale for the electromagnetic portion of the forward calorimeters is set using Z -> ee data. The energy scale of the outer calorimeters has been determined with test beam data and is confirmed through data with high transverse momentum jets. In this paper, we present the details of the calibration methods and accuracy.Öğe Centrality and pseudorapidity dependence of the transverse energy density in pPb collisions ats √sNN=5.02 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2019) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.The almost hermetic coverage of the CMS detector is used to measure the distribution of transverse energy, E-T, over 13.2 units of pseudorapidity, eta, for pPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV. The huge angular acceptance exploits the fact that the CASTOR calorimeter at -6.6 < eta < -5.2 is effectively present on both sides of the colliding system because of a switch in the proton-going and lead-going beam directions. This wide acceptance enables the study of correlations between well-separated angular regions and makes the measurement a particularly powerful test of event generators. For minimum bias pPb collisions the maximum value of dE(T)/d eta is 22 GeV, which implies an E-T per participant nucleon pair comparable to that of peripheral PbPb collisions at root s(NN) 7 = 2.76 TeV. The increase of dE(T)/d eta with centrality is much stronger for the lead-going side than for the proton-going side. The i dependence of dE(T)/d eta is sensitive to the eta range in which the centrality variable is defined. Several modern generators are compared to these results but none is able to capture all aspects of the eta and centrality dependence of the data and the correlations observed between different eta regions.Öğe Charged-particle angular correlations in XeXe collisions at √sNN=5.44 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2019) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.Azimuthal correlations of charged particles in xenon-xenon collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root s(NN) = 5.44 TeV are studied. The data were collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC with a total integrated luminosity of 3.42 mu b(-1). The collective motion of the system formed in the collision is parametrized by a Fourier expansion of the azimuthal particle density distribution. The azimuthal anisotropy coefficients v(2), v(3), and v(4) are obtained by the scalar-product, two-particle correlation, and multiparticle correlation methods. Within a hydrodynamic picture, these methods have different sensitivities to noncollective and fluctuation effects. The dependence of the Fourier coefficients on the size of the colliding system is explored by comparing the xenon-xenon results with equivalent lead-lead data. Model calculations that include initial-state fluctuation effects are also compared to the experimental results. The observed angular correlations provide new constraints on the hydrodynamic description of heavy ion collisions.Öğe Charged-particle nuclear modification factors in XeXe collisions at √SNN=5.44 TeV(Springer, 2018) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.The differential yields of charged particles having pseudorapidity within vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1 are measured using xenon-xenon (XeXe) collisions at root S-NN = 5.44 TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.42 mu b(-1), were collected in 2017 by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The yields are reported as functions of collision centrality and transverse momentum, pT, from 0.5 to 100 GeV. A previously reported pT spectrum from proton-proton collisions at root S = 5.02 TeV is used for comparison after correcting for the difference in center-of-mass energy. The nuclear modification factors using this reference, R-AA*, are constructed and compared to previous measurements and theoretical predictions. In head-on collisions, the R-AA* has a value of 0.17 in the pT range of 6-8 GeV, but increases to approximately 0.7 at 100 GeV. Above approximate to 6 GeV, the XeXe data show a notably smaller suppression than previous results for lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at root S-NN = 5.02 TeV when compared at the same centrality (i.e., the same fraction of total cross section). However, the XeXe suppression is slightly greater than that for PbPb in events having a similar number of participating nucleons.Öğe Combination of CMS searches for heavy resonances decaying to pairs of bosons or leptons(Elsevier, 2019) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.; Dragicevic, M.A statistical combination of searches for heavy resonances decaying to pairs of bosons or leptons is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1) collected during 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data are found to be consistent with expectations from the standard model background. Exclusion limits are set in the context of models of spin-1 heavy vector triplets and of spin-2 bulk gravitons. For mass degenerate W' and Z' resonances that predominantly couple to the standard model gauge bosons, the mass exclusion at 95% confidence level of heavy vector bosons is extended to 4.5 TeV as compared to 3.8 TeV determined from the best individual channel. This excluded mass increases to 5.0 TeV if the resonances couple predominantly to fermions. (C) 2019 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.Öğe Combination of Searches for Higgs Boson Pair Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at √s=13 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2019) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.This Letter describes a search for Higgs boson pair production using the combined results from four final states: bb gamma gamma, bb tau tau, bbbb, and bbVV, where V represents a W or Z boson. The search is performed using data collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment from LHC proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). Limits are set on the Higgs boson pair production cross section. A 95% confidence level observed (expected) upper limit on the non-resonant production cross section is set at 22.2 (12.8) times the standard model value. A search for narrow resonances decaying to Higgs boson pairs is also performed in the mass range 250-3000 GeV. No evidence for a signal is observed, and upper limits are set on the resonance production cross section.Öğe Combined measurements of Higgs boson couplings in proton- proton collisions at v s=13TeV(Springer, 2019) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.Combined measurements of the production and decay rates of the Higgs boson, as well as its couplings to vector bosons and fermions, are presented. The analysis uses the LHC proton-proton collision data set recorded with the CMS detector in 2016 at fb-1. The combination is based on analyses targeting the five main Higgs boson production mechanisms (gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with a W or Z boson, or a top quark-antiquark pair) and the following decay modes: H, ZZ, WW, , bb, and . Searches for invisible Higgs boson decays are also considered. The best-fit ratio of the signal yield to the standard model expectation is measured to be =1.17 +/- 0.10, assuming a Higgs boson mass of 125.09. Additional results are given for various assumptions on the scaling behavior of the production and decay modes, including generic parametrizations based on ratios of cross sections and branching fractions or couplings. The results are compatible with the standard model predictions in all parametrizations considered. In addition, constraints are placed on various two Higgs doublet models.Öğe Combined search for electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV(Springer, 2018) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.A statistical combination of several searches for the electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos is presented. All searches use proton-proton collision data at A root s = 13 TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). In addition to the combination of previous searches, a targeted analysis requiring three or more charged leptons (electrons or muons) is presented, focusing on the challenging scenario in which the difference in mass between the two least massive neutralinos is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson. The results are interpreted in simplified models of chargino-neutralino or neutralino pair production. For chargino-neutralino production, in the case when the lightest neutralino is massless, the combination yields an observed (expected) limit at the 95% confidence level on the chargino mass of up to 650 (570) GeV, improving upon the individual analysis limits by up to 40 GeV. If the mass difference between the two least massive neutralinos is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson in the chargino-neutralino model, the targeted search requiring three or more leptons obtains observed and expected exclusion limits of around 225 GeV on the second neutralino mass and 125 GeV on the lightest neutralino mass, improving the observed limit by about 60 GeV in both masses compared to the previous CMS result. In the neutralino pair production model, the combined observed (expected) exclusion limit on the neutralino mass extends up to 650-750 (550-750) GeV, depending on the branching fraction assumed. This extends the observed exclusion achieved in the individual analyses by up to 200 GeV. The combined result additionally excludes some intermediate gaps in the mass coverage of the individual analyses.
